Uplink Camera

Overview

Uplink is a VXG technology that enables IP cameras to connect directly to the Cloud VMS without requiring network configuration such as port forwarding or VPN setup.

Key characteristics

  • Plug-and-play connectivity — A lightweight software agent, such as the Uplink application or plug-in, is installed in the camera firmware. It establishes an outbound WebSocket Secure (WSS) channel to the cloud and tunnels ONVIF and RTSP protocols over port 443.

  • No on-premises hardware required — Unlike direct ONVIF connections, Uplink cameras do not require a public IP address or open inbound ports on the local network.

  • Camera identification — Uplink cameras are identified by their Serial Number (S/N) and MAC address, rather than by an IP address.

  • Broad camera support — VXG provides pre-built Uplink plug-ins for major camera manufacturers, including Axis, Hanwha, i-PRO, and Bosch. The Uplink SDK is publicly available for integration with additional camera models.

Have the following ready:

  • The camera’s Serial Number

  • The camera’s MAC Address (format XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX)

  • The camera Username and Password

The camera must be powered on and able to reach the cloud for registration to succeed.

  1. Open Settings, then go to Cameras.

  2. Open the Cameras tab and click Add Cam.

  3. On the Connection step, choose Uplink Camera.

  4. Select a Site.

  5. Enter a Timezone and a Name for the camera.

  6. (Optional) If the device has multiple lenses, turn on Multi Lens Camera and choose the lens number.

  7. Enter the camera identifiers:

    • Serial Number

    • MAC Address

  8. Confirm the Path if needed (a default is filled in for uplink cameras).

  9. Enter the camera Username and Password.

  10. Optionally choose a Subscription.

  11. Click Next step.

When the connection step succeeds, you will see a confirmation that the camera was created. Continue through the remaining setup steps.

Complete the remaining setup steps

After the connection is created, finish the wizard:

  1. Streams — Review or adjust stream settings if prompted. If streams are still being prepared, wait a moment or retry when ready.

  2. Backup — Optionally enable SD Card Backup / Enable auto backup if you want automatic backup from the camera.

  3. Services — Configure any additional services you need, then finish.

When you are done, the camera appears in the Cameras list and can be opened in Monitoring.

View the camera

  1. Open Monitoring from the main sidebar.

  2. Find the camera under All, Layouts, or Sites.

  3. Drag it into the viewing area, or double-click it to open live video.

You can also open the camera’s own interface later from Settings → Cameras by using the row Actions menu and choosing Camera UI.

Tips

  • Double-check the serial number and MAC address — incorrect values are a common reason registration fails.

  • Enter the MAC address with colons (for example, AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF).

  • Give the camera a clear name (site, building, or location) so it is easy to find in Monitoring.

  • If you meant to connect the camera through a gateway instead, choose Uplink Gateway on the Connection step, not Uplink Camera.

Summary

  1. Go to Settings → Cameras → Add Cam.

  2. Choose Uplink Camera.

  3. Enter site, name, timezone, serial number, MAC address, and credentials.

  4. Complete Streams, Backup, and Services.

  5. Open the camera in Monitoring when you are ready to view live video.
